Day One: Target!

On our first full day in Florida, what was number one on our list? Well, Target, duh. Actually we really did have to go to Target, because Matt forgot his jammies and shampoo. It was a good excuse to drive around and explore Niceville and Destin though.

This was our view as we drove across the bay into Destin:IMG_5204

This cured any homesickness we may have gotten.IMG_5207

We had lunch OUTSIDE.IMG_5208IMG_5210

That afternoon, we went to the beach!!

In the evening, Nate had a baseball game. It was a gorgeous evening to watch all the 5- and 6-year-olds play ball.IMG_5214IMG_5215IMG_5218

Kathryn loves watching Brother's games.

That night, Karl decided it was time to try a glass of Coke. He didn't like it, so I guess it's back to water and milk. IMG_5229

Oh, wait. Bedtime cereal first.IMG_5234

Outrunning a Snowstorm to Get to the Sunshine State

We could not have timed our vacation to visit Steve and Megan in Florida any better. For some time weather forecasts were predicting "plowable" snow for central Minnesota around the time we were to leave, and when we heard that Thursday the 11th would be the worst travel day, we decided to leave Wednesday afternoon and get ahead of it. When we left, temps were in the 30s but there was no snow yet, and as we drove through Wisconsin we were still in the clear. We had gotten very brave and decided to power through all the way to Florida, and Matt's overnight drive was almost entirely through rain, but at least we were getting closer to summer!

Our first stop was for dinner at a Subway/gas station in Eau Claire.

Karl was really excited to drive through the night, but I don't think it was as fun as he expected it to be.IMG_0135

Our rule for counting how many states you've been in is that you have to actually get out of the car and walk around. The last time we took a road trip down south, we inadvertently drove through Kentucky without stopping and Karl didn't get to count it. This time we made sure to stop in Kentucky so Karl could get out and add a state to his list, even though it was just at a gas station in the middle of the night.IMG_5198

Breakfast in Tennessee!IMG_0138

We stopped for lunch in Montgomery, where we had to change into shorts because of the sunny, 84° weather. Just a few hours later we made it to Niceville, where we started our week of summer fun! However, after 23 hours in the car, I neglected to take any pictures of Steve and Megan's gorgeous house. I did make a new Florida friend, though. This is their cute little dog, Mack.IMG_0797

Easter 2013

IMG_5160IMG_5163

We had Easter Dinner at the Elliotts'.
IMG_5187IMG_5183

There. I'm all caught up with the blog. I'm going to stay on top of it now, I promise!

Matt is 38!

Turning 38 on a Tuesday is pretty boring, but at least we got to have our usual birthday carmel roll breakfast.IMG_5170

Karl gave him a card with this sticker inside, and he insisted that Matt wear it THE WHOLE DAY. Every where we went people would say, "I'm sure you are." IMG_5166

Laura got her second set of braces on that day as well, so Matt had an extra-special present: the orthodontist's bill! Here's Laura's official "before" pic:IMG_0748

How Can You Not Love This Cat?

Seriously, I mean, wouldn't you love to get up from your nap to find your cat sleeping in the sink? IMG_0725

Matt says he's not a cat fan, but we all know better. Pippa has him right where she wants him.
IMG_0739

We also have a very sweet dog.IMG_0743

Stay tuned for an awesome guitar video!

Karl recently had his recording session with his guitar teacher. Every year he gets professionally recorded because his teacher uses the videos to demonstrate his guitar-teaching methods. I'll post the finished product as soon as I get it.

In other guitar-related news, Karl has been working on chords, riffs, (insert other guitar terms I don't really know) in addition to his regular classical work. I hope the neighborhood is ready for the garage band that is sure to form in about six years…

Update 7/22/2013 — the final videos are posted

Karl is a Monkey

Karl had his music program at school the other week, and he played the part of "Matt the Monkey." He even got to sing a solo!

Karl got to play the wood block drums to make the sound of the zebras trotting.

Karl, you were a fantastic monkey (talk about type-casting!).
