A Merry Meissner Christmas

I debated whether to post three separate blog entries or one huge one to describe our Christmas festivities, and decided to do one giant post. Those who tire easily may want to read this entry over the course of a couple days or so.

On Christmas Eve, we met Mom, Dad, Pam, Fred, Angie, and Jason at church for the 3:00 family service.

Karl sang with his friend Shelby a duet called "What Can We Give to the King?" Both Karl and Shelby love performing (especially when they get to sing into microphones), so it went very well.

After church, we went back to our house, since we would be hosting Christmas Eve with the Lundgren side. We took some quick pictures before Laura changed out of her dress.
DSC09419

Since Laura didn't sing at church, she played some Christmas music on the piano.
DSC09422

Most of Laura's music has an accompaniment part for the teacher, and when Laura plays for people, she never lets me play the other part because "then people won't be able to tell who's playing what." Last night, though, after Laura had played solo, she played all the pieces again and let me play with her. I felt very honored, as normally Laura insists on working alone.
DSC09429

Well, if Laura was going to play her instrument, Karl was determined to get out his guitar and show off all the progress he's made since the last time everyone heard him! Unlike Laura, Karl always lets Matt play along with him.
DSC09434

One of Karl's biggest fans is Justin.
DSC09435

Laura, Karl, Colin, and Justin were the only kids there, and when we tried to get a picture of all four together we realized that Christmas Eve, kids, and posed pictures do not work well together. Here's a nice one of Mom and Dad with Laura and Karl though.
DSC09443

The kids demonstrated tremendous patience last night while they waited to open gifts.
DSC09446

Here's Laura eating Dad's cinnamon bread while she sits next to the baker. How could Christmas get any better?
DSC09438

By singing Christmas carols, that's how! Matt played guitar while I played piano, and (almost) everyone else sang (don't ask me how I got Matt to agree to it--I wouldn't tell you!).

Finally, it was time for presents! Recently, whenever anyone asked Karl what he wanted for Christmas, he answered, "a pogo stick." Angie and Jason actually got him one!
DSC09472

Whenever anyone asked Laura what she wanted, she always answered, "books and movies." It didn't take her long to hunker down with a stack of books that she just opened.

Since the post office was open, Laurie had to work, and since the weather was so miserable, she had to work really late. Bryan, Laurie, and Scott missed a lot of the party, but we were happy that they arrived safely.
DSC09473

Because of the snowstorm, and because the kids were all excited about it, Angie and Jason decided to stay overnight with us and have a cousins' sleepover. Amazingly, Karl and Colin fell asleep quickly (it probably helped that they didn't go to bed until after 10:30!).
DSC09474

In the morning, the first stop was the fireplace to empty out the stockings. It's a good thing Angie and Jason came prepared!
DSC09476

Laura and Karl tore through their stockings, but Colin took out his two chocolate Santas that were on top and decided that was good enough for him! It took a lot of convincing to get him to see what else was in there, I guess because nothing could be better than those Santas! (Laura's and Karl's, on the other hand, will probably get eaten by me after I get tired of looking at them on the counter for weeks.)
DSC09477

After stockings, the kids went to the tree to see the big presents! Colin got a new bike!
DSC09486

Here's Laura opening the gift she got from Karl-the second Harry Potter book.
DSC09492

Normally, I go nuts picking up the wrapping paper as the kids are opening presents, but with four kids flinging paper all over, I didn't even try, so that by the end of gift opening our living room was in full Christmas carnage mode.
DSC09497

But we cleaned it up, and then had carmel rolls and pigs-in-a-blanket for breakfast.
DSC09498

After breakfast, it was time to play in the snow!
DSC09511

Since the snow was so sticky, the kids went outside and made a snowman. Colin added the blue "paint" (colored water).
DSC09520

As soon as the plows were done over at the church parking lot, the kids walked over to try out their new sleds on the freshly-made snow hills.

After a fun morning, the Elliotts decided it was time to get home, and soon it was time for us to celebrate Christmas at Pam and Fred's with Tanya, Jeff, Aly, and Emily. We got to sit out in the newly finished porch.

Karl got some "Flat Stanley" books from Pam and Fred, and he quickly sat down to read them. Just a few minutes earlier, this boy had been dancing around like a madman to Mannheim Steamroller.

One of the gifts Karl got this morning was a Lightning McQueen "shaving" kit, that came with shaving cream, a play-razor, and a shaving brush. Tonight after his bath, Karl insisted on learning how to shave, so Matt showed him how to do it, and now Karl is one smooth little man.

You made it to the end! We had such a fun Christmas, and we hope everyone else did too!

Nutcracker

Yesterday we met Pam, Fred, Tanya, Jeff, Aly, and Emily downtown to see the Nutcracker. Laura decided to wear her Christmas dress, and to bring her doll, Laura, in her matching dress!

Karl wore his candycane-crushing-dinosaur sweater.

Afterwards, we had dinner at Vescio's in Dinkytown.

Today, Laura and Karl had their Christmas program at church. "He SENT the gift!"

Then we went to Matt's cousin Lori's house to sing Christmas carols and to celebrate Matt's uncle Wally's birthday.
DSC09395

It's a good thing John and Lori have a gym in their basement to keep the kids busy!
DSC09393

We're all wiped out after such a busy weekend, but we're happy there's a lot more fun coming up this week!

Holidazzle

Last night we went to Jason and Angie's for tasty Chinese food, and then to downtown Minneapolis for the Holidazzle parade. It was crazy busy, but at least it wasn't super cold.

DSC09330

The kids found a ledge to sit on while we waited for the parade to begin.

As the crowd got crowdier, Karl ended up on Matt's shoulders.

Girl Scouts Snow Ball

This year the formal dance the Girl Scouts put on each year (the "Snow Ball") was themed, "Me and My Guy," and Matt got to escort Laura. She decided she wanted to wear her new Christmas dress, so here's a preview of her holiday clothes.

DSC09299

Besides the one father-daughter dance, Matt reported that for most of the evening the girls danced and the dads stood around and chatted. Typical. Matt and Laura actually left the dance a little early because she got so tired out, and said, "I'm just not a ball of pure energy like Karl."

Happy Birthday Laura!

As of today, we are the proud parents of an 8-year-old! When Laura woke up and ran to her place at the table, she couldn't wait to find out what was in that giant box...
DSC09203

It was a beanbag chair! Now she has a comfy place in her room to read all her books.

Laura chose to have carmel rolls for breakfast.
DSC09218

Sunday is a great day to have a birthday if you are Laura, since it's the day we always go to Perkin's.
DSC09219

She was especially happy when her French toast tower came.
DSC09223

Then it was time for the grand finale: We had a Pump it Up! party to celebrate Laura's, Karl's, and Colin's birthdays. We had loads of jumping fun!

Look at that great jump by Angie!

After all that jumping, we went to the party room for cake and ice cream. Angie was nice enough to bake individual cakes according to the birthday kids' preferences: chocolate for Colin, white for Laura (with light blue filling!), and marble for Karl.

Laura went to bed tired out and happy tonight. Her only complaint is that there was no snow for her birthday, but perhaps we'll get some this week. Happy birthday, Laura. Our lives became immeasurably better the day you were born, and it's so much fun watching you grow up!
