Introducing Pippa!

Karl and I have been working on Laura and Matt to get a cat, so Karl would have a living buddy to sleep on his bed. It was pretty easy convincing Laura, but Matt was tough. We really had to work on him, but even I was surprised at how quickly he caved. That's because we found a very nice cat! I had been keeping an eye on the available cats at the local shelters, because I knew what I wanted: a cuddly adult cat that was easy-going and would adapt well to our living situation (read: two kids and a dog). When "Peanut's" profile was put online last weekend, I knew she might work, so after guitar lessons on Monday Karl and I covertly visited her on her way home (and when I say covertly, I mean until I had to call Matt to help me with the directions because we drove around for a half hour looking for this place until I gave up and knew I had to call him…). Peanut was very friendly right from the start, and purred the whole time we visited, rubbing her face against us and snuggling up. So sweet! We could've taken her home that night, but I said I had to talk to my husband first, and at least give him time to find an apartment or something. When we came home, though, Matt and Laura were standing there expectantly, because they were sure we would have a cat with us. Come on, give me a little credit! I waited until the next day and THEN picked her up (I did ask Matt first, asking him if he would still love me if I got her, but I didn't wait for an answer). Karl and I decided that Peanut did not look like a Peanut at all, and that "Pippa" would be much more appropriate. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7191/6939789359_9fa39a7836_z.jpg

We set up a bed for her on Karl's bed, and sure enough, it's become her home base. Although she got up several times in the night (mostly to eat and use her litter box-- good girl!), she always came back to sleep with Karl. They are buddies now.http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7196/6793677494_8e9d339b14_z.jpg

Pippa lived with both a big and little dog, so I figured she would be ok with Penelope. They're still working things out. Right now Pippa is very wary of Penelope, and Penelope is learning that she's not allowed to look at the cat (greyhounds "track" their prey, so you have to teach them to let the cat approach them instead of the other way around). I don't think it'll take long, although we kept Penelope's muzzle on yesterday, and Pippa gave Penelope a good swipe at one point. It's only the second day, and things are already much better. The other thing we have to work on: counter surfing. Apparently Pippa's former owners were quite lax with their rules, because we've already gotten a fair amount of use out of our water bottle. Pippa was surrendered because her owners are getting a divorce, so I guess they had other things on their minds other than teaching their cats manners.

So, to sum up, I have a husband, a girl, a boy, a dog, and a cat. How perfect is that? And they're all sweet, most of the time. Pippa is such a cuddle bug that she's even starting to win over Matt. Give it time. It'll come.http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7186/6793677736_426a7b207a_z.jpg

Oma's Birthday Cake

Yesterday was Pam's birthday, and she and Fred came over for dinner. I looked in our cupboards for a cake mix, but both were chocolate. Laura quickly exclaimed, "Too bad, Mommy. This is a Meissner birthday dinner so you don't get chocolate this time!" Laura and Karl jumped at the chance to make a yellow cake with white frosting for her, and with a little supervision from Matt, they did it.http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7200/6933150025_849d95a7c5_z.jpg

They even decorated it. I wrote "Happy Birthday," and the kids used all 19 types we had of decorations to make it extra fancy. I suppose I needed to clean out the decorating corner of my cupboard… I'd say the result was quite lovely, though.http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7209/6787033994_1a0418f152_z.jpg

When we showed Pam the cake, the kids pointed out the variety of embellishments, including cows, moons, flowers, dinosaurs, colored sugar, Christmas sprinkles, rainbow sprinkles, stars, dolphins, and hearts.http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7189/6787034398_a065672f3e_z.jpg

We sang "Happy Birthday" slowly and somberly, as is our custom for anyone over 30. Just kidding. The kids were actually just tired from cake-baking, and I was sad that it wasn't chocolate. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7065/6787034756_6cac7944af_z.jpg

Laura and Karl are now taking cake orders. They only do white or yellow cake, though.

Cousin Sleepover Revisited

Aly and Emily were in town this past weekend, and on Saturday Karl and Emily stayed at Pam and Fred's while Aly came over here to stay with Laura. They gravitated to Laura's set of multi-colored nail polishes that she got for Christmas (each bottle has a picture of a cute animal on it).

Look carefully at this picture, because it's a recreation….

Valentine's Day Waffles

Ok, so I'm a bit behind in my blogging, and I don't do grand Valentine's Day red dinners like Angie, and I forgot to make the special day carmel rolls for breakfast, but I did come through with waffles for dinner. If that's not love, what is? And look at those adorable Valentine's Day shirts!http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7036/6907006751_b8a7563b20_z.jpg

P.S. Laura was way happier than she looks in this photo.

Laura's Dream Day at MOA

Last weekend, Laura and I drove to Bloomington to spend some quality girl time at the Mall of America. Our first stop was lunch at IHOP, and I forgot to take a picture, but I'm sure you've all seen plenty of pictures of Laura eating breakfast foods so you can just use your imagination.

As soon as we got to the mall, we headed directly to Barnes & Noble and settled in.http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7047/6906990737_dc057c4d2c_z.jpg

Next up was the American Girl store. Laura bought an animal poster book and a little dog named "Chocolate Chip" to add to her American Girl pet collection. Laura LOVES dogs and cats and cute little animals in theory, but not in reality. Her room is covered in cute animal posters. She loves to read about them. She snuggles up to her stuffed animals. But actually touch a real one? Ick. Get away.http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7179/6906991393_349a75ee0d_z.jpg

After checking out Lego Land and getting a small tub of Legos, we had a snack at Coldstone. Laura and I love love love Coldstone, and it's been a LONG time since we'd been there, so we savored every bite!http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7209/6906991897_3e2f8d043d_z.jpg

Oh, the main reason we went to the Mall of America is because Laura was scheduled to perform there. No biggie. She does it every year as part of a fund raiser for the MusicLink, which provides music scholarships. Laura was as cool as usual. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7185/6906992345_a297d54b0b_z.jpg

Karl Hits the Slopes

On Saturday, Karl and I met Jason and Colin at Wild Mountain to do some skiing. My video didn’t exactly turn out, but this one pretty much summarizes Karl’s first experience with downhill skiing:

That was pretty close to how it all went. But if you insist on more details…

Karl was eager to give skiing a try, and lucky for us Uncle Jason is very good ski instructor. We started out on the bunny hill, riding the magic carpet to the half-way point.

Skiing isn’t easy, but whenever Karl got frustrated, Colin was there with some encouraging words.

After lunch, we switched over to the tow rope and made it to the top of the bunny hill. Planning the route down the hill:

It didn’t take too much longer and we were riding the chairlift to the top to try make the first long run of the day!

We spent the rest of the afternoon skiing down “The Northern Route” and then riding the chairlift back to the top to do it all over again.

By the end of the afternoon, we were all exhausted.

Here’s my video…not quite as exciting as the first one, but I tried to spice it up a little bit.
