Introducing Pippa!
We set up a bed for her on Karl's bed, and sure enough, it's become her home base. Although she got up several times in the night (mostly to eat and use her litter box-- good girl!), she always came back to sleep with Karl. They are buddies now.
Pippa lived with both a big and little dog, so I figured she would be ok with Penelope. They're still working things out. Right now Pippa is very wary of Penelope, and Penelope is learning that she's not allowed to look at the cat (greyhounds "track" their prey, so you have to teach them to let the cat approach them instead of the other way around). I don't think it'll take long, although we kept Penelope's muzzle on yesterday, and Pippa gave Penelope a good swipe at one point. It's only the second day, and things are already much better. The other thing we have to work on: counter surfing. Apparently Pippa's former owners were quite lax with their rules, because we've already gotten a fair amount of use out of our water bottle. Pippa was surrendered because her owners are getting a divorce, so I guess they had other things on their minds other than teaching their cats manners.
So, to sum up, I have a husband, a girl, a boy, a dog, and a cat. How perfect is that? And they're all sweet, most of the time. Pippa is such a cuddle bug that she's even starting to win over Matt. Give it time. It'll come.

Oma's Birthday Cake
They even decorated it. I wrote "Happy Birthday," and the kids used all 19 types we had of decorations to make it extra fancy. I suppose I needed to clean out the decorating corner of my cupboard… I'd say the result was quite lovely, though.
When we showed Pam the cake, the kids pointed out the variety of embellishments, including cows, moons, flowers, dinosaurs, colored sugar, Christmas sprinkles, rainbow sprinkles, stars, dolphins, and hearts.
We sang "Happy Birthday" slowly and somberly, as is our custom for anyone over 30. Just kidding. The kids were actually just tired from cake-baking, and I was sad that it wasn't chocolate.
Laura and Karl are now taking cake orders. They only do white or yellow cake, though.

Cousin Sleepover Revisited
Look carefully at this picture, because it's a recreation….
…of this one from five years ago! Look at those little cuties!
Valentine's Day Waffles
P.S. Laura was way happier than she looks in this photo.
Laura's Dream Day at MOA
As soon as we got to the mall, we headed directly to Barnes & Noble and settled in.
Next up was the American Girl store. Laura bought an animal poster book and a little dog named "Chocolate Chip" to add to her American Girl pet collection. Laura LOVES dogs and cats and cute little animals in theory, but not in reality. Her room is covered in cute animal posters. She loves to read about them. She snuggles up to her stuffed animals. But actually touch a real one? Ick. Get away.
After checking out Lego Land and getting a small tub of Legos, we had a snack at Coldstone. Laura and I love love love Coldstone, and it's been a LONG time since we'd been there, so we savored every bite!
Oh, the main reason we went to the Mall of America is because Laura was scheduled to perform there. No biggie. She does it every year as part of a fund raiser for the MusicLink, which provides music scholarships. Laura was as cool as usual.

Karl Hits the Slopes
On Saturday, Karl and I met Jason and Colin at Wild Mountain to do some skiing. My video didn’t exactly turn out, but this one pretty much summarizes Karl’s first experience with downhill skiing:
That was pretty close to how it all went. But if you insist on more details…
Karl was eager to give skiing a try, and lucky for us Uncle Jason is very good ski instructor. We started out on the bunny hill, riding the magic carpet to the half-way point.
Skiing isn’t easy, but whenever Karl got frustrated, Colin was there with some encouraging words.
After lunch, we switched over to the tow rope and made it to the top of the bunny hill. Planning the route down the hill:
It didn’t take too much longer and we were riding the chairlift to the top to try make the first long run of the day!
We spent the rest of the afternoon skiing down “The Northern Route” and then riding the chairlift back to the top to do it all over again.
By the end of the afternoon, we were all exhausted.
Here’s my video…not quite as exciting as the first one, but I tried to spice it up a little bit.
