Yesterday was Pam's birthday, and she and Fred came over for dinner. I looked in our cupboards for a cake mix, but both were chocolate. Laura quickly exclaimed, "Too bad, Mommy. This is a Meissner birthday dinner so you don't get chocolate this time!" Laura and Karl jumped at the chance to make a yellow cake with white frosting for her, and with a little supervision from Matt, they did it.
They even decorated it. I wrote "Happy Birthday," and the kids used all 19 types we had of decorations to make it extra fancy. I suppose I needed to clean out the decorating corner of my cupboard… I'd say the result was quite lovely, though.
When we showed Pam the cake, the kids pointed out the variety of embellishments, including cows, moons, flowers, dinosaurs, colored sugar, Christmas sprinkles, rainbow sprinkles, stars, dolphins, and hearts.
We sang "Happy Birthday" slowly and somberly, as is our custom for anyone over 30. Just kidding. The kids were actually just tired from cake-baking, and I was sad that it wasn't chocolate.
Laura and Karl are now taking cake orders. They only do white or yellow cake, though.
